Week 13 Story: The Battle with Adam Smasher

V had come home from one of his previous adventures absolutely exhausted. He and Jacky had been fighting for their lives to make it out of the Arasaka compound, and had barely gotten away with the goods they had been after for weeks. They'd stumbled back into his apartment the night before, scrapping together some food from the fridge and taping some minor wounds up before passing out on the couch. Little did they know that within the evening they'd soon be fighting for their survival once more.

V's previous scuffle with Yorinobu Arasaka had not been settled after his escaped with Goro Takemura, but Yorinobu had been preoccupied taking over his father's empire and making vast changes that fell in line with his vision for Arasaka's future. Instead of hunting V down himself, he had tasked his personal guard, Adam Smasher, to track down and finish V off. Unfortunately, the raid on the Arasaka compound by Jacky and V directed Adam's attention to V's whereabouts, leading Smasher to track them back to V's megabuilding.

Standing outside V's door, Adam scanned the apartment with his retinal implant, detecting V and Jacky sound asleep on the couch. As he hacked into the door's security panel, Adam popped a smoke bomb, obscuring anyone's vision while he silently entered the apartment. Crouching through the door frame, this ogre of a cyborg towered over any opponent with his giant cybernetic limbs capable of crushing a car. Unfortunately, stealth was not his greatest strength, and he stepped on an empty food carton, waking V from his sleep.

"Huh?" V mumbled groggily, seeing a giant black blur as his vision cleared from his deep sleep.

"Hello, V. Yorinobu sends his regards." Adam growled, before lunging towards him.

"Oh, shit!" yelled V, shooting up off the couch and diving under Adam's grab. Fully awake, he glanced back at the corner of the room, Jacky still sound asleep and snoring. He'd be on his own for this fight.

The battle was fierce, with V having to complete extreme feats of acrobatics as he continued dodging Adam's blows and grabs, his large arms preventing him from being able to grab the nimble V and finish him off. One false move would lead to V's demise, spiking his adrenaline levels to the max to keep him alive. Adam backed V into a corner, but made the mistake of going for V with both arms, leaving a gap next to his torso for V to dive through and roll out. Adam's fists smashed into the wall, leaving him stuck for a few seconds. V saw his chance and went in for the kill.

Jumping onto Adam's back, V whipped out his trusty steel pipe, and swung as hard as he could into the exposed arm socket on Adam's shoulder. Smashing halfway through its' connections, Adam roared as the pipe lodged itself and V jumped away. Adam made the mistake of continuing to free his hands from the wall, and in doing so, tore the rest of his steel tendons off his left arm. Oil and other mechanical fluids dripping from what was left of his arm hole, Adam ran off into the night, leaving a giant metal arm sticking out from V's apartment wall.

Author's Note: This story is based off Beowulf's battle with Grendel. Most elements of the story are the same, with both Beowulf and V's compatriots passed out while they fought a giant beast. I added more context as to why V was being hunted down, and then wrote my own fight scene, keeping the same ending of the attacker losing their arm in the fight.

  1. Hi Aaron!
I really enjoyed your story! I will say that it took me a minute to figure out that you were re-telling the story of Beowulf. I think I would have gotten it sooner if that had been one of the stories I had read for this class. I really liked how you gave more of a backstory on why he was being hunted. Great job!
